Romania's intelligence service said on 8 September that it had prevented a sabotage operation allegedly coordinated by Russian entities. SRI said the case involved a Russian citizen living in Romania and was handled with prosecutors, police, military intelligence and foreign partners. [1]

According to SRI, the suspect had been monitored since February and collected photographs and video of communications centres, Romanian and NATO-used military bases, security institutions and critical infrastructure. The service alleged that an intermediary instructed him to document strategic military targets, including Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft while they were in Romania. [1]

DIICOT detained the 40-year-old for 24 hours on suspicion of attempted acts of diversion and planned to seek 30 days of pre-trial detention, TVR reported. Prosecutors said the alleged surveillance covered sites in Cluj, Constanța, Călărași, Ilfov and Bucharest. The claims remain allegations pending judicial proceedings. [2]
